First Chapter Freebies
Tiers and Teasers
An Important Announcement
One year ago today, I launched The Order of the Ancile - Liches, Legends, and Love, with the plan to serialize the book before releasing it on Amazon in ebook and paperback format. I also had ideas for three future books set in the Ancile universe.
Twenty-two chapters later, I put "Liches" on hiatus while I dealt with various issues including burnout and depression.
If you've been reading my blog in the last few months, you'll know I'm doing MUCH better, and I'm ready to start making plans and getting back out into the world.
One of those plans involves The Order of the Ancile, including Liches, Legends, and Love. While I was taking a break, a couple of things changed in my mind about the Order of the Ancile Series.
First, a new idea claimed me and won't let go. Secondly, I thought of some fundamental changes I want to make to Liches, Legends, and Love that will not only improve the story overall but also bring it more in line with what types of books I currently want to write. i.e. Paranormal-Romance instead of Urban-Fantasy.
To that end, I am removing Liches, Legends, and Love from the internet and I will be republishing a new, updated version at a later date. But I wanted to let everyone know what was going on and thank everyone who supported Liches while I was serializing it.
That brings me to the new book. I still LOVE serialized fiction. It works well with my own motivation/work schedule, but I also think it offers readers something unique. The chance to read my books in their earliest forms and offer opinions/ suggestions on how those books can be improved, and even what type of characters and stories they'd like to see from me in the future.
While I was on hiatus, a new subscription-based author platform called REAM launched, and it seems like a perfect fit for me. I can share the first drafts of my stories in serial format, while also sharing behind-the-scenes tidbits, snippets, and plans for future books, and gather valuable feedback while building a community of readers.
There's also a monetary aspect to it which I hope I will be able to funnel back into the production of future books and other bookish awesomeness, like audiobooks, and maybe merch/swag if there's enough interest. I also want to use it as an opportunity to give back, and I intend to donate a portion of the money I make via Ream to various charities.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in supporting, please head over to Ream and give me a follow. https://reamstories.com/claredugmore
I will be launching the NEW first book in the Order of the Ancile Series on October 6th, with a new chapter every Friday (with breaks for holidays etc.) until the story is complete. When it launches, I will also be revealing the tiers and perks for my Ream Subscription service.
And to whet your appetite, here's a snippet from the (as yet) untitled story:
---
He came to me in my dreams. Whispering my name.
Madelyne.
The man made of alabaster.
The dreams started at around the same time my abilities manifested -- when I was thirteen -- and I was sure the two were connected in some way. But even after discovering I wasn’t a freak for my ability to sense when people were getting sick or to read other people’s thoughts, I never told anyone about the dreams.
I didn’t know if the figure was a mere effigy or if there was something more to the man I sought.
The only thing I knew for certain was that he was calling out for me to find him, and had been for the past twelve years.
The day my abilities manifested would be a day I’d never forget. The events that followed were seared into my mind as surely as the features of the alabaster man.
It was my thirteenth birthday.
----
I've also decided to unpublish all my other books from Amazon. They're no longer in line with the type of stories I want to write and release. Right now, my focus is on fantasy, with various degrees of romance. As with Liches, I want to thank everyone who supported my contemporary romance novels throughout the years. I wouldn't be where I am today without that support, so from the bottom of my heart -- Thank you. <3.
You'll be hearing from me again in the coming weeks as I prepare to launch my Ream Subscription Service and the (new) first book in the Ancile series.
Until then; Stay Safe and Write On!

Cover Reveal: Loyalty, by Carrie Butler
Last month, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the cover for the final book in Carrie Butler's Mark of Nexus Series, Loyalty.
Today, Carrie has reveal the cover to the world. Isn't it awesome?!
And here's the blurb:
Rena Collins should be busy planning her happily-ever-after. Instead, she’s working for the enemy—or so they think. With the help of her fiancé Wallace and his unscrupulous brother Cole, she’s been struggling to hone her powers in secret. If they can stop Faye, the leader of ERA, the prophesied end to their war could be within reach...
Too bad they don’t get the chance.
The human experimentation project has moved forward, thanks to the help of an outside group of supernaturals, and it’s about to explode across the country. With lives on the line and a violent clash of wills suddenly at hand, Rena, Wallace, and Cole must decide where their loyalties lie. Now. Is the future of humanity worth dying for, when they aren’t even a part of it? Just how far are they willing to go?

This month I'm wondering, Which Path is the Right One? Which is funny, since my last in-depth blog post was as part of Carrie Butler's How I Found the Right Path BlogHop.
And for one part of my writing journey, I have found the right path. In the realms of drafting and revising, I know where I'm going, and years have experience have taught me what works for me, and what doesn't.
But, I'm about to embark on uncharted territory. That fabled land after revisions.
My new-adult paranormal-romance/ urban-fantasy is in the safe hands of my critters (Man, I love that term for them! ^_^), and the feedback I've received so far has been positive.
So, what comes next? Do I start querying small presses and entering pitch contests? Do I start seeking an agent? Or do I pursue self-publishing?
I honestly don't know. All three options appeal to me for different reasons, all three having their own pros and cons.
I just wonder ... which will be right for me, my story and my writing career? I honestly don't know, and I'd love some feedback from people already published. So, if you're willing, please share your experiences with querying, pitching, and self-publishing. All comments are welcome.
And, if you're still unpublished like me, or don't feel like sharing, feel free to talk about your own insecurity. I'm happy to listen, and help anyway I can.
Have a great June, everyone, and good luck on your literary endeavors for the month!
Let It Go!
Is this post just an excuse to make Frozen references and Photoshop a cartoon version of my head onto Elsa's body?
Maybe!
Do I actually have a point to make underneath all this insanity?
YES!
Let It Go isn't just a catchy tune, but advice every writer should follow at some point in their writing careers.
And this week, I find myself advising me to let it go.
You see, I've finally finished revisions/ edits on my new-adult urban-fantasy, paranormal-romance - which now had a name. YAY! But I'll reveal that another time. ;)
I've done as much as I can on my own, so it's time to hand my baby, which has been 18 months' worth of work, over to CPs and betas.
This is sort of huge for me. I've never gotten this far before. This is the first complete project I've ever sent to more than one or two people in it's entirety
Instead of worrying about what they'll think, or if it's good enough, I'm letting go. I'm trusting my critters, and am going to enjoy the time away from my project. I've already started making notes for the next books in the series, plus I want to look at the novel Kyra Lennon and I are co-writing.
The criticism never bothered me anyway ...

Back in March (OMG! Has it been that long?!) I finished the first draft of my new-adult, paranormal-romance, The Order of the Ancile: Book One.
Those of you who're already published might not find this a big deal. For me it's HUGE. It brings the total of novels I've completed a first draft of to TWO!
I have a handful of incomplete novels, most of which fell apart, and I lost interest in, when I got about ¾ of the way through, and started revising. Revisions are HARD for me. Once other people give me feedback, and I start seeing the flaws in my story, my willpower flees and I give in.
Sure, I can go back to these abandoned drafts in the future, and every draft is experience and growth. Now I'm at revisions stage again, I'm slightly alarmed by how well it's going.
In the past week, I've given my novel a read through, catching any obvious typos, and I'm amazed at how cohesive it is. Usually, by this point, I'm finding plot holes, and weak writing.
Not this time!
But now I'm wondering, have the years of practice paid off? Have my skills improved enough and my writing is stronger? Or am I actually blind to all the flaws, and kidding myself?
I'm scared once I hand this baby over to my CPs, they're going to read it and go "Erm, Clare, WTF are you thinking? This is crap!"
Okay, maybe not that harsh. My CPs are lovely, and I think my story is good. But is it good enough? I don't just mean good enough that my CPs, and close friends will like it. I mean good enough that publishers will be interested. Good enough that if it's released, I won't get a million horrible reviews.
I've spent almost a year and a half on this thing. What happens, after all this time, if I'm just not that good a writer? What happens if this love story I've invented, with twists and turns along the way, fails to elicit an emotional reaction in anyone who reads it? What happens if my characters aren't as likeable and relatable as I hoped? What happens if my villain is non-threatening, and no one can take the danger in the story seriously?
I know I'll never be able to please everyone, and I'll never know if my stories are any good if I don't share them, but right now, the idea of putting them out there for the world to see, scares the bejesus out of me, and I'm tempted just to leave my stories where they are – on my hard drive – for only me to see!
So, there you have it. What I'm feeling insecure about this month. Please feel free to share your own writing insecurity in the comments. A problem shared is a problem halved, as they say ...
April IWSG: Onward and Upwards

Make sure you head on over to each of the co-hosts' blogs and show them some love!
--
I thought long and hard about my insecurity for April, and I'm happy to say, I just haven't got one ... I'm in a good place with my writing right now.
I've managed to find a good balance between work and writing, which has allowed me to finish the first draft of my NA urban-fantasy, paranormal-romance The Order of the Ancile: Book One (I totes need an actual title!)
I'm now headed to revisions land, but I'm not as daunted by the prospect as I have been with previous projects.
The encouragement I got on my January IWSG post is still motivating me, along with the support of my hubby and beta readers. :)
So instead, I want to offer support and encouragement to those who are struggling this month, and I'll be trying to visit as many new blogs as possible.
If you've got something on your mind, please feel free to leave a comment or point me in the direction of your blog, and I'll come pay a visit, and bring some words of encouragement.
I'll end this post with inspirational, motivational graphics.
Good luck to everyone in their writing endeavors this month! ^_^
