A Wild Clare Appeared!

*waves from the entrance of my cave*

If you were a Pokemon, which would you be? I'd be an Umbreon. A cute cat/ fox/ dog/ rabbit creature who harnesses the power of the moon!

But this post isn't about Pokemon, I just borrowed the title from the Pokemon phrase "A wild Pokemon appeared," because that's a little bit how I'm feeling right now.

I feel like I've just emerged from a dark cave, or the depths of a haunted forest or something.

In my last post, I talked about putting my serial web fiction, LICHES, LEGENDS AND LOVE on hiatus, and how part of the reason was that I was struggling due to (possible) ADHD.

Well, things certainly got worse before they got better!

After dropping out of the Hexes and Heiresses: Tales of the Witch Queens Collection (which releases on August 29, if you're still interested in reading the stories by the other awesome authors in the collection) and putting my own writing on hiatus, I thought I'd be okay with just ghostwriting alone.

I wasn't.

I tried to power through, because I hated the idea of breaking the agreement I had with the client, and I didn't like the thought of dropping down to one income while my hubby's business is still less than two years old.

Side tangent -- if you love handheld gaming, specifically the Steam Deck and Asus Rog Ally, or if you just want to support a growing business (which in turn supports me) please check out RetroResolve. It really is an amazing site for gaming news, and my hubby has put in a lot of work over the last 14(?) months.

Anyway, back on track ... I was near the beginning of a new ghostwriting project and the same old patterns of avoidance were coming. Plus, I could feel the signs of burnout and depression. I started sinking deeper and deeper into despair. I went from avoiding work by doing things I enjoyed like crafting, to instead just sleeping all day. And then staying up all night watching YouTube, while my intrusive thoughts run rampant.

These thoughts are thoughts I've dealt with before, and I'm sure many others have too. I started feeling like things were never going to get better, and maybe there was only one way out ... but I didn't want to seriously contemplate *that*.

I just wanted to get better.

Thankfully, as well as being a wonderful video game journalist and fantastic father, the man I married is also an amazing partner, who always listens to me, and offers me the best advice.

After talking things through with my hubby I knew it was time to make changes. Even though I hated letting my client down, I told them I'm stepping away from ghostwriting. It wasn't doing me any favors mentally, and I've since realized it's not the right profession for me.

I also called the GP. I told them how I was feeling and asked what more help is available. One of the first things I was able to do is change my ADHD diagnosis referral from the NHS (the health system in the UK for those who don't know) to something called 'Right to Choose', which basically allows people to get private medical care, but the NHS still covers the cost, because they're failing to meet the initial needs of the NHS. Yes, it's a sign the NHS needs reform, but that's not what this post is about.

Anyway, my referral has been sent, and compared to the NHS waiting times (which I've been told can be anything from two years onwards), I'm looking at a seven-month wait for an assessment, and then a further seven months of medication triation. Not ideal, by any means, but I can't afford to get a private diagnosis, so that's where I'm at.

The GP also gave me a sick note, so that I can change my benefit claim from self-employed to unable to work at the moment. That means that instead of having monthly checkings with a government advisor to see how my self-employment is progressing, instead, I'm having regular check-ins with a slightly different department that will provide me with advice, guidance, and services to help with my mental health conditions until I'm well enough to work again. As an added bonus, we will also receive benefit payments if my husband's income falls under a certain amount.

The GP also referred me for CBT and a service called 'listening and guidance'. The CBT has about a three-month waiting list, and I've only had one listening and guidance session, but it is helping me look at my life through a different lens.

Most helpful of all has been the support of the person from the government's capacity for work department. She put me in touch with Access to Work, which offers mental health help, and grants for people struggling to find employment or maintain employment due to mental health conditions. Through AtW, I have been able to get ADHD coaching sessions, which will start in a few weeks.

Along with these services, I must also say one thing I know that is helping is my spirituality and relationship with God. For many, many years I've struggled with religion, and also 'dabbled' in the occult and witchcraft. But through my mom, who is a devout Christian, I have found my way back to God. I'm not going to tell anyone else what to do, who to worship, or whatever. I'm just saying, from my personal experience, knowing I am on God's path and that They are looking out for me is really helping.

So, all that to say, I finally feel like I'm coming out of a cave. I want to do things other than just sleep and scroll on the internet. I'm thinking about my future.

And I'm thinking about writing.

I've had an idea that won't leave me alone, and I've written about 1k words already, but I don't want to make any commitments, because knowing both how my ADHD works, and that I'm still recovering from burnout, it could be *something* or it could end up being nothing. Only time will tell. But even if it does turn out to be nothing, the important thing is, I feel like I have a spark that has been missing from my life slowly returning to me.

I don't know what that means for Liches, Legends, and Love yet, either. I *want* to finish the serial, and then publish the complete edition on Amazon. But I don't have a time scale for that, or any idea if I will continue the Ancile Series. For now, it's all very much, wait and see. But wait and see is better than the darkness I was lost in before.

Finally, I'm thinking about what I want to do when I am well enough to work again. While I did LOVE ghostwriting for a long time, I've since come to realize, I held onto it for too long. The types of stories I was writing, and the pressure I was putting on myself weren't good for my health, or for my passion for writing. It won't be something I go back to.

So what's next? Honestly, I have no clue! I've narrowed it down to a small list of 'must-haves'. Ideally, I'd like to continue to be able to work from home (at least for the foreseeable future), it must be creative. I love the idea of also being able to help others. And I also feel I'd be better suited to a position where I have someone to report to, so that I have a measure of accountability to keep me on track.

Of course, the ADHD coaching will also help with that and will help me identify other strengths and weaknesses.

One path I'm contemplating is getting back into the publishing industry/ assisting authors, similar to what I was doing with CQ, but on a smaller scale. BUT I also keep thinking about the ADHD situation in the UK, and how I *want* to help with that. So maybe something connected to ADHD coaching is a possibility. Again, time will tell.

But for now, I'm thinking of the future, and making plans. We have my son and his girlfriend coming to stay with us for a week this Saturday, and we have a few day trips planned. Then I think I will continue taking the rest of August off, and doing things I love such as crafting and playing Sims.

But from September, I'd like to get into a more work-like routine, maybe work on this story idea I've had. Maybe do some courses to help me redirect my career.

So yeah, that's where I'm at right now. Life isn't perfect, but things are a lot better than they've been for months, and I know the future can only get better from here.

If you've stuck with me this far, thanks for reading! If you have news you'd like to share, or anything important I've missed, I'd love to hear all about it. I'd love to reconnect with people who I've fallen out of touch with, so in the coming weeks, I'm going to be making an effort to catch up with people, and hopefully be around more on social media.

January Update

Happy Friday, everyone!

I hope you've all had a healthy, happy, productive week!

My week has been excellent.

Work at Curiosity Quills is going well, and I'm still very much enjoying it. Having lots of fun at the moment reaching out to book reviewers to see if they want to become part of the official CQ review team, and then sending ARCs to those who've signed up. I get a real buzz helping authors promote their work, and seeing how happy they are when they get positive feedback. There's also some exciting behind the scenes stuff going on, including a complete site redesign and some super awesome news I'm not sure I can announce yet ...

Writing wise, everything is good in that department too! I got over whatever funk I was in last week when I wrote my first ISWG post. Thanks everyone who offered advice. It seems like the best course of action for me is to read the story back to remind myself of why I wanted to write it in the first place, and then power through until I'm out of my negative frame of mind.

It seems to be working, too, because I written every day this week. I'm working on a scene where the main characters, Roxie and Sol, have to break into a cosmetics company to do some digging on the big bad and discover something pretty gruesome. It's been a lot of fun to write, and I've somehow amassed 5K!

My plans for this weekend include going shopping for a new desk, critiquing Waffles by the awesome Alex Tanner, and hopefully getting a spot of writing done. I had every intention of doing all that last weekend, but then the Elder Scrolls online beta happened ...

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, whether you're working or relaxing. I'll try to pop in over the weekend, and catch up on all the blogs I've missed recently.

NaNoWrimo '12 Progress: Day Nine

Day: Nine

Favourite line from today's writing:
He starts strumming a winding melody, full of little intricacies that aren’t usually found in his rock style. For some reason the song makes me think of walking through a field on a summer’s day, and being surrounded by butterflies. It’s quite lovely, and very uplifting.

Experiences of the Day: Today is the first time this NaNo where I've written something, then looked back and thought is this any good. There are words, lovely words even, but do they do anything to progress the story. I fear they're all fluff and filler, and will have to be cut in revisions. Sometimes that's the trouble with NaNoWriMo, and have to write a certain amount of words in a day!

NaNoWrimo '12 Progress: Day Seven & Eight

 Day: Seven and Eight

Word count for today:

Favourite line from today's writing:
With only my long t-shirt-come-nightdress and nickers, and his jogging bottoms separating us, things soon become heated, as I press Leto down into the couch, and straddle his lap.

Experiences of the Day: Yesterday was a struggle for me. I had some stuff going on at home, and didn't manage to write until the evening. No matter how hard I pushed myself, the words weren't coming. I finished the day tired, and behind the daily target for the first time this NaNoWriMo.
Today more than made up for it, and I wrote 3k, in large thanks to word wars with Kyra Lennon. Competing really brings out the best in me, and I stop myself from procrastinating. All in all, I'm happy with my progress, where the story is heading, and am looking forwards to the rest of NaNo.

I'd just like to say thanks for all the supportive comments on these entries, and on the 'I’m Thankful For My Readers Bloghop!' and today's earlier post. I am trying to reply to all of them, it's just taking me a little longer than usual. I do really appreciate your support though.

NaNoWrimo '12 Progress: Day Five

Favourite line from today's writing:
In the back of my mind, late at night when my insecurities are worst, I still question our differences and wonder if he’d be better suited to someone he has more in common with.

Experiences of the Day: I had another crisis today. The first scene I wrote for NaNo hasn't actually happened yet chronologically, so when I was writing scenes in the 'present' characters were referencing something that hasn't actually happened to them yet, leaving me with an odd mix of present and future events going on. Thankfully, I managed to move around the scenes, meaning I've lost nothing. I don't think I'll be writing out of order again though; my head can't keep up!

Thanks to everyone who has been reading my NaNo updates and commenting on them; they're greatly appreciated. I am trying to reply to all comments, but if I'm a little slow, please don't think it's because I'm ignoring you.

NaNoWrimo '12 Progress: Day Four

Day: Four

Where I should be: 6664

Word count for today:

Favourite line from today's writing:
My high is soon deflated when I take my break, and see a girl in her early twenties, with glossy blonde hair and perky breasts, being interviewed to take over my position come Friday. Great, I’m being replaced by friggin’ Barbie!

Experiences of the Day: Didn't get a chance to write until this evening today, but thankfully managed almost 2k in two hours. Nothing major has happened, but the story is ticking along nicely. Had fun trying to think of a pseudonym for my antagonist, Abraxas. Thought Sax Arab might be a little obvious! Finally settled on Byron Saxton – and yes, I know it's the name of a guy in WWE developmental, and I'll have to change it in edits. But damn, I love that name!

How is everyone else getting on?

One Lovely Blog Award

Last week I was awarded the One Lovely Blog Award by Carrie-Anne. Thank you, Carrie-Anne!

To accept the award, I have to write seven facts about myself, so here goes:

1. As a child I had imaginary friends called Emma and Eric. When my mum found out the baby she was expecting was a girl, she and my dad wanted to name her Emma. I protested saying there couldn't be two Emmas in the family. My younger sister is called Lisa.

2. I've been abroad four times in my life, once to Yugoslavia, which is now known as Serbia and Montenegro. I don't remember much about the holiday, as I was three years-old, but my mum has a picture of me wearing a massive wooden mask.

3. As a teen I was obsessed with the Brit-pop band Blur, and even wrote to lead singer Damon Albarn asking him to sign the picture I'd sent. He did so, and the signed picture took pride of place on my wall for many years. I unfortuately lost it when I moved house though.

 4. I've - thankfully - never broken a bone in my body. Though I did have to have surgery as a child for a Hiatus hernia.

5. My oldest son was due on my twentieth birthday. The considerate boy was born a week early, so I could still go out with my friends for a few hours and celebrate.

6. I'm not allergic to any food, though I do have an aversion to sea food, especially prawns (shrimp). Their little eyes creep me the heck out!

7. I have my lip pierced. During my late teens, I went through a Goth phase and getting my lip pierced was one of the things I did, along with dying my hair black, and wearing white face make up. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt at all, though the anaesthetic almost made me sick, and caused me to drool everywhere on the bus home! Though I dress a little more 'normally' now, I still have my lip piercing, as it's part of me.

I pass this award onto the following fabulous people:

Kyra Lennon

JayBird

Candilynn Fite

Christine Rains

Victoria Smith

Jaycee DeLorenzo

Carrie Butler

In other news, Hubby started reading through Cupid for me; we had a massive discussion on Friday, and worked out all the kinks for the ending. I'm so excited about what we came up with, it's gonna be awesome. Getting back to my read through today. So far, I've changed tense and made minor corrections to 37,993 our of 67, 733 words, and one of my CPs has read through seven chapters, so everything is progressing nicely.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my new personal blog, The Life and Loves of Clare Dugmore - I'll probably have another update later this week. :D

Also, before I go, can I please remind everyone about Jessa Russo's Ghosts and the Girls Who Love Them bloghop. It ends on October 15th, and my entry can be seen here.  Please check it out, and vote for me if you haven't already.

Finally, what do you all think of my new header. I made it using vector stock from Vector Open Stock and love it. Isn't it pretty?

Hope everyone has a great week, I'll try to get around to as many blogs as possible during the week.

Camp NaNoWriMo Aug '12: Day Four

Day: Four

Where I should be: 6664

Where I actually am:
20,001

Word count for today:
5658

Favourite line from today's writing:
He left a trail of kisses down my neck and to my collarbone, each one weakening my resolve. He stopped at the dip in my t-shirt just above my cleavage, and looked up at me, lust etched into his green eyes.

Experiences of the Day: Today I learned that even when I intend for a character to do something, I don't always remember to have them do it. My MC Callie was meant to call an acquaintance and ask her to meet them at a gig. I forgot to have Callie do it, and acquaintance Dinah still showed up. I had to make a note to retcon it in edits.

Is Camp NaNo still going well for everyone else? Let me know if you've had a prolific writing weekend. I'd love to hear your favourite lines!

Sibylline Nights Edit Progress and Stylish Blogger Award

Editing Draft One of 'Sibylline Nights' :
50619 / 105831 (47.83%)

I was going to leave updating until Monday, but then I was updating my person blog with information about how I'm progressing with the editing of Sibylline Nights, and realised I hadn't mentioned my progress here for a while.

Editing is going really well, yesterday we (Hubby and I) finished editing chapter thirty. That's 50, 619 words and 95 pages done out of an original 105, 831 words and 209 pages. So just about halfway there. Though I did realise, at this point in the story in the unedited version, it was only 40, 060 words and 77 pages, meaning I've added almost 11k words and 18 pages since I began editing! That's kind of scary, and I think once the whole thing is complete I'm going to have to go back and cut a bunch of stuff to make the novel into a publishable length. Hubby and I already started discussing some scenes near the start that could go because they don't add much to the progress of the story.

As well as editing, we also made some groundwork with some of the more fantasy elements, including defining where magic comes from in my universe and giving voices to minor characters. Exciting stuff. I love editing because I'm taking something that was just okay before, adding meat to it, and making something (that I think is) awesome. I have such a good feeling about this story, and can't wait until it's ready to start querying.

Christine Rains awarded me with the Stylish Blogger Award a few days ago. Thank you Christine!

Before I talk about my own personal style, I wanted to give credit for the layout of my blog. The original template for this blog was designed, and a modified version is used, by my Hubby on his gaming site Video Games Interactive.  Thank you, honey! ♥♥♥

My style is quite eclectic, and I can easily jump from casual to dressed up, depending on what I'm what I'm doing and my mood. I tend to favour a mixture of dark colours, with bold accents/ make up though. My favourite combinations being black and pink, or black and purple. I would say my style is bohemian, bordering on Gothic.

I think I was most stylist on my wedding day. As I mentioned in the nine facts and one fake post a few weeks ago I wore a fuschia pink wedding dress.

Hubby and I on our Wedding day.

Now I get to tag five people I think have stylish blogs. If you've received this award before don't feel obliged to do it again. I tag:

Jaybird
Kyra Lennon
Jolene Perry
Jaycee Delorenz
Laura

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and those in the U.K enjoy the double bank holiday for the Queen's Jubilee.
