Courage Blog Tour - Teaser Images: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Post

Today the multi-talented Carrie Butler is visiting as part of her Courage Blog Tour, to discuss to topics I find fascinating and think Carrie excels at - marketing and graphic design!

Take it away, Carrie!

Let’s start by making something clear: You are a professional.

It’s true! If you’ve written something for publication, you’ve chosen to represent yourself as such—even when it comes to support tasks. So, imagine this: After years of working on your novel, it’s finally time to do a little promotion. You skim over your social media feeds and notice a growing trend. Teaser graphics are everywhere... and you want one.

Your next move is to spend hours poring over stock sites until you find the perfect image. It would probably be expensive to hire a designer, so you decide it’s best to do it yourself. After all, you don’t know whether or not the teaser will actually help sales.

So, you bring up your favorite photo editor, paste your excerpt, and switch it to a curly font for a little personality. Then you shift the photo’s colors around to make it look artsy. Awesome! You lean forward, anxious to click the button that will plaster your masterpiece all over the—
Crash!

I burst through the window beside your desk—you know, since you don’t have a skylight for me to live out my Batman fantasies—and rush over to your computer monitor. Ignore the glass. Ignore the bleeding. This is a scenario, and we have bigger fish to fry. Let’s take a look at that teaser graphic...

5. Color - Does the color scheme evoke the right emotions? Is it representative of your genre? Take a step back. Do the colors “play nice” together? Should we bust out the color wheel?

4. Space, balance, etc. - It’s not a wall of text, is it? Oh God, it is. It’s a wall of text over the models’ faces, and it’s bumping against the edges of the image... *shudder*

Okay, what can we adjust? Where can we create white/negative space to make this more pleasing to the eye? Is the excerpt too long? Does the overall image look balanced?

3. Contrast - Dear, sweet contrast...

This plays into the next point. Because this is a teaser, we need to actually be able to read the excerpt. Is it easily distinguishable from the background?

2. Readability - How easy is it to read that font from a distance? If you’re sharing the teaser via social media, it’s probably not going to be huge. Try a few different fonts/sizes (not on the same image), and then ask a friend for their opinion.

1. Odds and ends - Is it fuzzy? Did you buy a stock photo that was too small? Wait. Did you buy a (licensed) stock photo, at all? What about a public domain image or a royalty free texture? There are no hard and fast rules here. It’s okay to play around with things until you have something you’re proud of.

A hiss snaps you back to reality. The room is quickly filling with thick smoke, and I’m making a swift exit. Best of luck with your teaser! :)

Title: Courage
Author: Carrie Butler
Series: Mark of Nexus #2
Expected publication: October 15th, 2013
Category: New Adult (NA)
Genre: Paranormal Romance (PNR)

Making a deal with the bad guys wasn’t the highlight of Rena Collins’ semester, but, hey, it saved her boyfriend. Now, in order to appease the human-altering organization known as ERA, she’ll crawl under their microscope while they study the Mark of Nexus and plot their eye-glazed version of the future—until she realizes that’s not all they’re plotting.

Wallace Blake has always known his girlfriend is unlike most girls. But now that information has surfaced regarding the two bloodlines that balance his supernatural race, he finally understands why. Rena belongs to one of them. She’s been augmenting his power, all along...

Enter: Corynn Catley. Brought into the country under the guise of an internship, she’s intended to become ERA’s secret weapon. Kind of. Her abilities cancel out Wallace’s, rendering him powerless, but that’s exactly what he’s always wanted. Too bad it only works when his girlfriend’s not around.

All the while, Rena fails to notice the crush her geeky best friend, Aiden Ross, is nursing. He’d give anything for her to see him in a new light—even reinvent himself through questionable means--but there’s a reason people are told to be careful what they wish for. Finding the courage to tell her could put everyone’s lives in danger. Amazon: Barnes & Noble: The Book Depository: Kobo: Smashwords: iTunes: Sony Reader Store:

Courage (Mark of Nexus #2) is a New Adult paranormal romance that features four unique points-of-view. While the novel stands alone, it is best enjoyed after Strength (Mark of Nexus #1).

One (1) signed paperback of Courage by Carrie Butler {US only}
Five (5) eBook copies of Courage {INT}
One (1) limited edition Mark of Nexus pillowcase {US only}

Carrie Butler daydreamed her way through college—until they thrust a marketing degree into her hands, slapped a summa cum laude seal on the corner, and booted her out into a less-than-stellar job market.

Instead of panicking at the prospect of unemployment, she used her Midwestern logic to steer into the skid and point her life in the direction she really wanted to go: writing out those daydreams.

Her passion for New Adult fiction led her to co-found NA Alley—a widely recognized informational hub for the category.

She is the author of STRENGTH (Mark of Nexus #1) and COURAGE (Mark of Nexus #2).

Working Wednesday: Back in the Saddle

Hey everyone!

As I mentioned in the recent Memorable Monday post, I'm back from my blogging break, and resuming with not only my regular blogging schedule, but work on my new adult, paranormal romance.

But before I get onto that, an update about how my job at CQP is going, and a little bit of cross promotion.

Over the summer I was offered a promotion at CQP. So now, in addition to my social media management duties, I'm in charge of web curation - i.e. making sure guest posts, and the weekly column by Irving Podolsky goes up correctly, complete with images etc. - and organizing review and blog tours for our titles.

I'm really loving the new duties. Handling web curation just makes my social media duties all that easier, as I'm not waiting on others for links etc. and working with the authors, helping them organize blog tours, is nothing but a pleasure. Everyone I have contact with is so friendly, and it brings me so much joy helping other authors get their work out there.

CQP have a lot of big things coming up in the next couple of months, including the launch of their anthologies Primetime and After Dark; which I CANNOT wait to share the details about when everything is finalized.

And I'd like to invite anyone who is interested in what CQP are doing to join us to, by either signing up for our reviewer and blog tour host mailing list, or signing up for our monthly newsletter which contains exclusive details about releases, contests and giveaways.

So, as I mentioned, over the summer I took some time off. When I wasn't doing my CQP work, I was hanging out with my boys - more about that on Friday - and not thinking about my novel(s).

I'm SO glad I took a break.

Before the break, I was very unfocused, and unsure what I wanted to be doing. I was starting to fall out of love with my paranormal romance, because I always find editing the hardest part, and I was questioning what I wanted to be as a writer.

Part of that was inspired by my sense that I haven't done enough. In the eighteen months I've been blogging and taking my writing more seriously, I haven't published ANYTHING. Yet people who started out around the same time as me are on their third or forth novels. Added to that was the pile of novels I've shelved for the time being.

I was really feeling like I needed to get something out by the end of the year, and was toying with the idea of self-publishing an old, shelved, contemporary romance as a serialization online.

That led to a lot of confused thoughts, with me wondering if I should be writing PNR at all, or if my focus should be on contemporary.

After lots of back-and-forth and a little bit of time redeveloping my contemporary romance, Hubby had some words of wisdom for me. He said, I shouldn't be rushing to get a book out this year, just for the sake of getting a book out, because the quality will suffer. When I publish something, it should be the best I can make it at the time.

He's so right.

My first published book has to mean something, because this is what the literary world will base their initial opinions of me on.

So, what do I want to known as?

Well, my blog title says it all, doesn't it? Clare Dugmore Writes Romance with a Twist. While I love romantic plots, and my stories always contain them, for me to be happy as a writer, I have to also appease my supernatural loving side. The world of paranormal and fantasy creatures fascinates me, and I'm happier when I'm writing about those things.

So, yeah, it took me the whole of the summer to figure out I should continue what I'm doing! LOL Typical, eh?

But the time away, and the chance to be introspective, was what I needed to fall in love with my PNR again. I've recently picked it up, and gotten back into editing what I've written so far. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say.

So now the kids are back at school, I'm trying to get back into the habit of working on my novel every day, with the intention of finishing it in a timely manner, but also finishing it to the best of my abilities, so that it represents me well.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes ....

Thanks for listening to me ramble. Knowing you guys are here to listen to my thoughts, and maybe offer a comment, means a lot to me. And I cannot wait to get caught up with your blogs again, and see what everyone else has been doing over the summer.

And if you're so inclined  please check out The Life and Loves of Clare Dugmore, on Friday to see what I've been up to with the family.

Working Wednesday: WiP and Internship Update

Happy Hump Day! The rest of the week is down hill from here!!

Thanks to everyone who dropped by for Memorable Monday, and helped spread the word about Marta Szemik's free promotional offer of her paranormal romance novella Marked

I'm continuing the blogging schedule this week, and it's back to Working Wednesdays; for an update on how my work in progress is going, as well as how I'm getting on with my Curiosity Quills internship.

The work in progress is going really well. Still working on revisions of the first 30k. Since giving it to a friend for feedback, I've also asked Kyra Lennon to critique it, and she's given me some excellent advice and notes throughout, so I'm slowly working through her suggestions.

I feel for the most part, the plot and world building is spot-on, but it's the character development and voice that's lacking. I think writing in first person - instead of third, which I'm more used to - is what's challenging me, but with Kyra pointing out where I'm lacking, I feel like I'm on the right track again and can add some depth to my MC Roxie.

I now feel confident I can work through the revisions and them move onto act two.

As for my internship, things are going great there. I sent my proposal of ideas to my bosses, and they loved my suggestions, so I've been implementing them. My duties have been expanded a little too, to include contacting companies regarding sponsorship for things that Curiosity Quills can offer in promotional giveaways. I'm also working on a social media survey so that I can gain some user feedback as to how to improve what I'm doing.

Lots to keep me busy, but it's all fun stuff I'm greatly enjoying.

How is everyone else getting on this week? What projects are you working on? What are you goals. Tell me all about them, I'd love to hear. and good luck with whatever you're endeavouring to do.

If you'd like, check my personal blog for Favourites Fridays, where I'll be talking about what TV shows/ books/ movies and video games I've been enjoying this week, and what I've been getting up to with Hubby and our boys.

Working Wednesday

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Thanks to everyone who dropped in and commented on Monday's entry,  Followers Blog Hop. It was great meeting all you new people, and I'll still be trying to hop round to all your blogs.

I'm continuing with my new posting schedule, this time with Working Wednesday, where I talk about what I've been doing in terms of my WiP, and my internship at Curiosity Quills.

The internship is going great. I've really settled in, get along well with my colleagues, and I *think* I have a good grasp of the ins and outs of social media. Things at CQs are expanding a little, with a lot going on behind the scenes, and I want to help with that. Which is why this week, I'm brain-storming ideas on how I can improve the social media aspects, and make a better, more personal, connection with our audience. Hopefully I'll have some ideas to suggest to my bosses later on in the week.

Writing wise, I haven't done much. I'm still trying to adjust to a new schedule that includes working for CQs. Additionally, I've hit the point in my read troughs where I feel I can't do much more on my own. I need someone to bounce ideas off. I've given the first act to a friend for her to beta read, and she's given me some excellent feedback, I'm just trying to work out how to apply that feedback. Revisions is the hardest part of writing for me. I don't always want someone to hold my hand, but at the moment, I like working with my Hubby so we can discuss ideas and he can offer me guidance. One thing he suggested is studying other books in the genre, not just reading them, but really studying them paragraph by paragraph and making notes. So that's what I've been doing this week. Hopefully looking at some of my peers, and studying how they do it, will help me improve my own story.

What has everyone been up to this week? What projects are you working on? Are there areas you're finding difficult or testing? What about areas you're really enjoying? I'd love to hear all about it.

If you'd like, check my personal blog for Favourites Fridays, where I'll be talking about what TV shows/ books/ movies and video games I've been enjoying this week, and what I've been getting up to with Hubby and our boys.

Also on Friday, here I'll be hosting Annalisa Crawford for the first time as part of her blog tour for her short story compilation That Sadie Thing

Update, Triberr and Work In Progress Madness

from http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/
I have a new monitor! Yay!

Last week Oldest broke my old one! I've been using Hubby's laptop since then, but my new one arrived today. I'm so happy to be back on my system. Even though I created a user account on Hubby's laptop, it just didn't feel right.

Despite the week of borrowed computer, I still managed to be productive. I've given my WiP a couple of read troughs, made some revisions, and made some notes on what still needs improving. All in all, my editing of Act One is going great.

I saw on Twitter earlier the WiPMadness tag. I'm still not 100% sure what WiP Madness is, I think it ties into Camp NaNo, but I'm going to use it to motivate me with my Act One revisions.

Anyone else doing WiP Madness? Let me know and we can encourage each other.

I also started my marketing internship for Curiosity Quills today. I get to play on Twitter, Facebook & Pinterest all day. GREATEST.JOB.EVER! Seriously though, I'm really enjoying learning about the social media marketing aspect of being a published writer, and learning about new sites etc.

triberr.com/
Which brings me to Triberr ... Courtney - my CQ mentor - told me about this site. It's a place where you can connect with other blogs, by joining a tribe, and then people in your tribe share your links. I've only just started using it, and I'm just getting to grips with tribes and approving people's links, so we'll see how it turns out. Anyone else on Triberr? Let me know and I'll join your tribe. :D

What's everyone's plans for the week? What are you working on? Are you taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo? Any releases/ cover reveals etc. I might have missed? Let me know, I'd love to hear all about it.

Buccaneer Blogfest: Week Four, Day Ten

I'm back again with day nine of the month long Buccaneer Blogfest hosted by Sharon Bayliss and Courtney Young.

Final Countdown (July 30 – August 3)

This week is the Final Countdown (is anyone else now humming the Europe song?). The end of the blogfest, where we talk about our experiences, host a give away and share our thoughts on Social Media.

July 30 - Social Media: Share your feelings and opinions about social media and it's relation to writing and reading.

I love social media, I think it's an excellent way for people of similar interests to connect. For a writer, it's an excellent way of building a support network, exchanging experiences and sharing advice.

I've made so many friends through blogging, and then connected with them on Facebook, Twitter and other sites like Goodreads. These platforms help you get a better understanding of what your online friends are like as people, while also informing you about their work and what they're currently up to.

Social media is also a great marketing tool, and I've seen so many authors doing blog tours, or hosting giveaway for when they get X amount of followers/ likes.

There's also the fun aspect of social media, with sites like Pinterest and Polyvore. I've seen so many inspiration things on both those sites. It's a great way to get motivated by looking at your friends pins and seeing what inspires them.
