Day Three: How Do You Get To Know Your Characters?
My WIP age-gap romance is told in first person, from Jade's perspective, so you get to know Jade through her words, thoughts, feelings and how she views the world. Additionally, all secondary characters, including her love interest Seth, are filtered through Jade's eyes.
On the whole she's a pretty reliable narrator, and how she sees people is mostly how they really are. I think an exception would be Jade's nemesis, one of the TV network's actresses, Courtney Sinclair.
While Courtney is indeed a bitch, I think she's presented in an even harsher light, because it's filtered through Jade.
I haven't yet got to the point in the story where Seth's ex-wife Tessa is introduced, but I'm sure a similar situation will arise there, too. Even though Tessa will be around to cause trouble, of course it will seem worse filtered through Jade!
I suppose the same can also be said of Seth and Jade's friends. As they're all filtered through her, you probably see less of their flaws.Although Jade is definitely not someone who lets her friends get away with things because she's close to them. She's not afraid to call people up on their bullshit, and there's a few times within the story when she does exactly that!
