Z is for (Trading) Zingers!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my Y is for yelling post yesterday.
For the final day and letter Z, I have Zingers (thanks to Nikki Tetreault for the idea). A scene where Kian is trading pre-fight zingers/ insults with his opponent. Enjoy ...

After fight-night, weigh-ins were my favourite part of MMA. A week before a scheduled match-up, the two competitors would meet face-to-face one final time before their fight, to make sure they'd made match weight.

Originally it was just a way to ensure both fighters were falling within their category, but somewhere along the line, it turned into something more. Fans started turning up, and with pre-fight adrenaline high, but competitors not allowed to lay hands on each other yet, the only way to best the other and show dominance was verbally.

I pulled into the car park of Ferrum, my pulse racing and my mouth dry. Not much had changed in the few weeks since I'd been here last, apart from maybe my head space. I knew after the fight with Matthews I was moving onto bigger and better things, and I wanted to go out in a blaze of glory.

At our fight, I was going to end him, and leave no question in anyone's mind who was the true Welterweight Champion, but before then I was going to tear him down with my tongue. If there was one thing I could do well, aside from fighting, it was dish out the insults.

I headed to the locker room, and changed into my fight gear. The logo of my main sponsor, Frenzy Energy Drinks, in bright orange was a stark contrast to my black trunks.

After taping up my wrists and putting on my gloves, I was ready to go. I slipped on a pain of flip-flops and headed to the fight arena, where the media and fans were gathered.

As I walked down to the stage where the scales were set up, a chorus of boos and jeers rang out. My awful interview with Elliot Johnson had aired, and my already nefarious reputation has only gotten darker.

Fuck 'em, I thought, flipping off a reporter who was yelling abuse. Cameras snapped, and I knew that little outburst would make the tabloid rags tomorrow.

Matthews was already on stage, standing to the right of the scales, a smug smile on his lips. I could tell by his posture, in his head he already had the fight won. He'd beaten me once, and reckoned doing it again would be child's play.

I've got new for you, pal. After I'm done with you today, you won't be wearing that gormless grin.

Taylor made the introductions, then me, him and Matthews posed for photos, mine and Matthews' fists raises.

When Matthews stepped aside, I climbed up onto the scales. The digital counter shot up, displaying 170 lb. Perfect weight.

I stepped back as Matthew sauntered onto the scales, that inane smile still on his face, like the lights were on, but no one was home.

170 lb.

With us both making weight, nothing but time was stopping us from fighting.

Six days, three hours, forty-three minutes to go ...

Fans and media gathered around for the official announcement.

“Fighting from the blue corner, weighing 170 pounds, and hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, Benjamin Matthews.”

The crowd cheered as Matthews stepped forwards, and raised his hands; clapping his gloves together.

“And fighting from the red corner, weighing 170 pounds, and hailing from County Wicklow, Ireland, Kian Murphy.”

I stepped forward to a chorus of boos, and stopped myself from flipping everyone off. Instead, I strode towards Matthews, standing just centimetres from him. He was a few inches taller than me, and peered down at me.

“You see this?” I said, tapping the title belt around my waist. “You want it? You’re going to have to pry it off my cold, dead body.”

“Oh, I intend to. You think me dislocating your shoulder last time was bad? This time, I’m gonna tear both your arms out their sockets?”

“Yeah? Well, you heard what I did to Bagley in training. I had that kimura locked in so tight I broke his arm. But you won’t have to worry about me doing that. I’ve got something much more specific in mind for you. When I’m done, you won’t even have teeth so they can use your dental records to identify you from.
I’m gonna beat you so badly, blood will be flowing out of that cage like a river. You’re gonna pay for dislocating my shoulder, and thinking you could ever have my title.”

“You talk the talk, Murphy, but we all know you’re got a hot head, and not the finesse to beat me. You broke Bagley’s arm ‘cos he called you a pussy, that’s how easily taunted you are. He’s right, you are a pussy. And an idiot if you think you can keep me from that belt. You’re nothing but a yellow coward.”

My ears started ringing. Who the fuck was he to call me a coward. I clenched my fists to my sides and counted to ten.

“Coward, idiot, pussy. Call me what you want. They’ll only be calling you one thing when I’m through with it; dead.”

Y is for Yelling and All It Takes Chapter Eight

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my X is for XRay post yesterday.  Today, for the letter Y, I have lots of yelling, as we see the TV interview from All It Takes chapter seven, only from Kian's POV. Enjoy ...

X is X-Ray

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my W is for What's To Come post yesterday.

Today, for the letter X, I have sneak peek of a scene from forthcoming chapter fourteen. Enjoy...

The doctor lowered the x-ray slide, and peered at me from the end of my bed.
“I’m afraid you’ve fractured your collar bone,” he said. “I can see from your medical notes you previously broke the bone a few years ago, and the recent injury you sustained has damaged it again.”
I groaned, remembering how long it’d taken me to get back to fighting shape last time. “How long will I be out?”
“I advise a minimum of two months before you can start rehabbing it.”
I rubbed my face, the muscles around my eyes and nose feeling tender from where Matthews had pummelled me.
“And this?” I said, pointing to the laceration above my right eye.
“We’ll take a look at the wound in a week, and if it’s healing well with no signs of infection, we’ll remove the stitches.”
“Great. Thanks, doc.”
“You’re welcome. Though after this, I would seriously reconsider your career choices. Fighting is taking a terrible toll on your body.”
“Yeah. Thanks man. I will.”
The doctor left, and the nurse returned to give me another round of antibiotics and painkillers. Then I fell into a fitful sleep, my subconscious replaying my fight with Matthews.

W is for What's to Come ...

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my V is for Violence post on Friday.

Today, for the letter W, I have sneak peek of what's to come in All It Takes. Enjoy ...

So, what's to come in All It Takes as the story progresses? Well, coming up this Wednesday, we have chapter eight, where we'll see the interview Megan watched in chapter seven, from Kian's point of view, and the fallout from him attacking an interviewer on TV.

Here's a little taster...

Bennett yelled cut, the camera stopped filming, and he stormed towards me.
“Kian man, chill. It’s okay. What’s gotten into you?
“Him,” I said, spinning around to glare at Johnson, who was scrambling away. “Did you not hear the digs he was making?”
“Who, Johnson? That guy’s a compete pain in the arse. This one time he yelled at one of the catering staff because his chips were ‘luke-fucking-warm!’ He’s a prima donna, don’t let him get to you, man.”
“I know I shouldn’t, but the guy was egging me on, what would you have done if you were me? That tosser’s had it in for me since I arrived.”
The fallout from the interview, and Megan's subsequent conversation with Emilia Silva (coming up in chapter nine), push Megan and Kian in different directions, and Megan begins questioning her feelings for Kian.

I don't want to give too much away, but chapter ten on wards will start bringing into play some life changing events, they'll set up for the end of the story!

S is for Stacey

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my R is for Ruby post yesterday - Kian sure does have a lot on his hands, with a baby on the way, and Ruby as a stalker!

Thankfully, Megan has someone awesome on her side, her BFF Stacey, who I'd like to introduce you to in today's post ...

Stacey Sullivan is Megan's blonde, bright and bubbly best friend. The two study graphic design together at uni, and have known each other since they were sixteen, when they met in college.

Stacey is fun loving, and always up for a party. She brings a lighter side to Megan, and All It Takes. She's also fiercely loyal, and offers to kick the butt of Megan's baby's dad, when she first finds out Megan is pregnant.

Along with Josh Browne, Stacey is actually one of the catalysts of All It Takes, as it's she who persuades Megan to go to O'Neil's on the night Meg meets Kian.

Stacey begins the story with a crush on MMA fighter Josh, and they hook-up in the first chapter. Their relationship continues throughout the story, which makes for some interesting conflict, as Stacey is Megan's BFF, and Josh is Kian's training buddy.

As well as bringing some fun to All It Takes, Stacey is a key character, as she acts as Megan's confidante, being there to reassure Megan about the pregnancy, listen to her worries and fears, and help her unravel her changing feelings for Kian.

R is for Ruby

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and visited my Q is for Questions post yesterday.

Today, for the letter  R I have a scene from an upcoming chapter, where Megan meets Kian's former fling/ turned stalker, Ruby.

I headed along the corridor to Kian’s room, pausing when I heard a female voice; assuming it was his sister.

Standing outside his door was a tall redhead, chatting on her phone, her long hair dyed the color of a pillar box.

She abruptly ended the call when she saw me, her eyes narrowing.

“Hey,” I said. If it was Kian’s sister, I wanted to make a good first impression.

Her eyes focused on my baby bump. “Who are you?”

“I’m Megan.” When my name failed to gain a response, I added. “The mother of Kian’s baby.”

Her glossy lips formed a thin line, and she shook her head. “Kian isn’t having a baby. He would have told me.”

Okay, not his sister. I knew he’d told her and his parents. Then who the hell was she?

She was tall, about Kian’s height, and dressed in expensive looking clothes. Her heels would have made Stacey envious. Her makeup was heavier than I’d wear during the day, her dark eyebrows drawing together as she regarded me. Her figure was slim and toned, the type of body I’d have loved before I got pregnant. Compared to her, with perky boobs and an apple shaped butt, I felt like a beached whale.

I wanted to disappear, to fade into the wall, but she was still staring at me, her penciled brow arched.

“I’d know, I’m with him all the time,” she said, a sneer forming on her lips.

I didn’t like the way she was looking at me, like I was something she’d scraped off her shoe, and I didn’t miss the implication of her statement that she was with Kian all the time. Her arrogance bolstered my confidence. No one spoke to me like that.

“Yeah? Well I’m the one who’s pregnant. Maybe he just didn’t think you were important enough to tell.”

Her eyes widened, and she opened her mouth to respond, but I didn’t give her a chance, instead pushing passed and entering Kian’s room.

“Who’s the strange redhead in the corridor?” I asked, crossing the room and taking a seat beside his bed.

Kian groaned and sat up. “Ruby, my stalker. I’ll have a nurse in to get rid of her.”

Kian pushed the call button, and a few moments later, the nurse I’d passed in reception came in.

“Everything okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, apart from the unwelcome visitor. Was there a redhead outside my room?”

“You mean that girl from earlier? She’s gone to get a coffee, I think. Why, is she bothering you?”

“Yeah, I don’t want her in here again. Will you tell hospital security to throw her out?”

“Will do, Mr Murphy. Is there anything else I can get for you while I’m here?”

“No, thanks.”

With a nod, the nurse left Kian’s room.

I turned to him, a million questions on my lips. “You have a stalker?”
