Today kicks off the character blog fest "I'm Hearing Voices" (click on the image for more info) and I'm so excited to get started.
And once again, I'm being an over achiever.
This fest posed quite a problem for me, as I have three main characters in Sibylline Nights and I really didn't know which one to pick.
I thought of picking one character for each of the three challenges of the fest, but then thought that might cause me to miss out on some fun development.
So instead, I'm doing each challenge THREE times, once for each triplet. Pinning the girls down to chat was no easy feat, so I hope you enjoy this little snippet into the minds of Nola, Esmee and Maggie.
What is your biggest vulnerability? Do others know this or is it a secret?
"I'm a witch, I have magical abilities. I don't have vulnerabilities ... Okay, you think that's a cop out answer? Alright, if I had to answer, I'd say it's that I don't trust easily. I grew up in care, and that sort of environment causes you to build walls around yourself. People know this about me, they just don't know why."
What do people believe about you that is false?
"People believe a lot of shit about me that's false. I think only a handful of people know the real me. They think I'm a slut because I used to sell my body. They think I'm a bitch because I keep people at a distance. They think I'm depressed because I'm a Goth. But none of that is true. I let people believe what they want to believe though. It doesn't matter to me.
What would your best friend say is your fatal flaw? Why?
"Naima would say I like things a little too much. If there are a pair of boots I want, I have to have them, even if it means not eating for a few days. And I'd rather go out to a club and have a good time with my friends than save for a "rainy" day. I like material possessions, and I'll go to great lengths to have something I want."
What would the same friend say is your one redeeming quality? Why?
"That I know how to have a good time! Haha! I'm fun, and don't let life bring me down. I'm loyal to people I trust. If I let you through my walls you'll be my friend for life. I think Naima would also say I'm non-judgemental. If you're a trusted friend, it will take something huge for me to turn my back on you. I'm pretty accepting of all walks of life. Even ones people would deem really bad."
What do you want most? What will you do to get it?
"For witches to be free from the control of the Champions and the government that tries to oppress us. I'd do anything to ensure the freedom of witches. Even if it meant innocents had to die. It's for the greater good, after all."

What is your biggest vulnerability? Do others know this or is it a secret?
"Maybe that I still believe in true love, and that one day I'll meet my prince charming. Others might call me naive. I say I'm a romantic. Mum and Dad have been happily married for twenty-five years, and I truly believe I can have some of that happiness too."
What do people believe about you that is false?
"That I'm soft and can't stand up for myself because I'm a girl and like the colour pink. I may not have the most offensive magical power, but if my loved ones were in danger, I could fight with the best of them, believe me."
What would your best friend say is your fatal flaw? Why?
"Jenn would likely say that I interfere with people's lives too much, but it's only because I care. I can't help trying to sort things out when she and Liam have a fight. I just want my best friend to be happy again."
What would the same friend say is your one redeeming quality? Why?
"My big heart. I have time for everyone and will always help those who need it, even if it means putting myself last. Making other happy makes me happy."
What do you want most? What will you do to get it?
"For everyone, witches and non witches, to be able to live in harmony together without all this negativity. Then I could see my parents and friends again. I hate that they think I'm dead. I'd give anything, even my magic, to see them again."

What is your biggest vulnerability? Do others know this or is it a secret?
"I suppose people would say my intelligence is also my biggest vulnerability. I often have a hard time relating to others and their emotions because there's no text books about feelings. Sometimes being so clever makes me feel alienated, too."
What do people believe about you that is false?
"That I'm a nerd and spend all my time studying. I do have fun too. Honest! But perhaps what I find fun is different to what others find fun and often for me, studying is enjoyable and not a chore. The lines sort of blur together."
What would your best friend say is your fatal flaw? Why?
"Well … I didn't really have friends. Not until I found out I was a witch anyway. Esmee and Quinn are those I'm closest to now. I know Esmee would say my lack of understanding when it comes to boys, and matters of the heart is my biggest flaw. She says I need to read between the lines me when I'm talking to Quinn … whatever that means."
What would the same friend say is your one redeeming quality? Why?
"That I have an answer for everything. If there's a problem I can look at all the logical solutions and find a way to fix it. I remember information well too. It's like having an encyclopedia inside my head."
What do you want most? What will you do to get it?
"Sometimes I think I want peace, for the fighting between magical and non magical people to stop. But really what I want is for all this to have never happened. I'm glad I found my Grams and sisters but I wish I could go back to my old life. I wouldn't give up my new family to get my old one back though. I want a way to have both!"

Very interesting triangle with these unique individuals. Love their names and their faces. Good job on the blogfest!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for dropping by and leaving a comment. I'm glad you found my girls interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhile being an over achiever isn't at all a bad thing, I really would have loved to see you concentrate on one, as the topic was answer the questions from one who is difficult to write from. Anyway, I was most interested in Esmee. The believing in true love bit is really good. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment.
ReplyDeleteI did think of doing just one, but honestly I find all three characters equally as hard to write, and then on other occasions equally as easy to write.
I'd glad you liked Esmee and found her interesting.
Thanks again for your comments.
All very interesting characters. I can read the difference in thier voices. Great job.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I'm glad you can see the difference in their voices, it means I'm on the right track.
ReplyDeleteI love this kind of story, with multiple girl characters in a kind of 'group'. They have distinct personalities. Very fun :) (And I love that you have pictures of them!)
ReplyDeleteKyra said: "I really wanted to be able to pick a favourite, but each of the girls is interesting. I have a bit of a soft spot for Esmee, but I would like to learn a lot more about Nola and Maggie too. :) "
ReplyDeleteKyra, I accidently deleted your comment, and can't get it back. So sorry.
Thanks for commenting though. I'd glad you liked the insight into my girls.
Choosing a favourite is so tough for me. I love Esmee, but then there's so much about Nola and Maggie I adore too. I'm glad you find all three interesting.
Thank you for dropping by and commenting, Melissa. I'm glad you liked the snippet. I'm quite fond of stories with with multiple girl characters, too. I think having a sister I'm close with influenced that.
ReplyDeleteI really felt drawn to the nerdy girl. I like her attitude and intelligence is very sexy. I think out of the three girls, I would want to cultivate a friendship with the third one.
ReplyDeleteThree very different and interesting girls you've got there! Loved their answers!
ReplyDeleteWith a group of protagonists it is hard to make distinct voices for each one. You did a great job at "over-achieving!" Your new follower, Roland
ReplyDeleteMichael, Sarah and Roland, thank you all for dropping buy and leaving comments.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked the snippets of my girls, and thought I did well showing their different voices.
Michael, I'm sure once she comes out of her shell, Maggie could be very sexy indeed! ;)
Wow, such great voices for all three girls! And I love the pics! I can totally hear them talking to me. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Clare! I'm a new follower.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite (if I have to pick one) is Esmee. I like that her vulnerability is believing in true love. We have that in common.
Wes, Cassie and Emily, thank you all for stopping by and leaving comments.
ReplyDeleteWes - yes, Nola certainly has a lot you can sympathise with.
Cassie - glad you liked all three girls, and found you could hear them talking to you.
Emily - welcome, and thanks for the follow. I'm quite drawn to Esmee's vulnerability too. I'm a strong believer in true love.
Hey Clare! So glad to find your website! Awesome! And I love the pictures of your characters almost as much as I love their interviews. So intriguing! Sounds like you've got well thought out characters in your book. That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stoppin by the blog, Leigh and leaving a comment.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked the interview with my girls, and their pictures.
Thanks for the compliment about them sounding well thought out.
AWESOME. I want to read more!
ReplyDeleteClare--How fun to hear the differences in triplets. Their voices were so distinct! I think that is what I loved most :)
ReplyDeleteCarol and Angela, thanks for stopping by and leaving comments.
ReplyDeleteCarol, if you're interested in more, I have a handful of excerpts on the blog.
Angela, I'm glad you loved their distinct voices so much. :D
Stopped by with the blog hop and I must say I do like the characters you have chosen. I love the idea of being able to write about a person when I am in a mood. A happy, dancing in the living room may invoke Esmee, etc. I do see each voice emerging. I hope we hear more from them this week!
ReplyDeleteThese sisters are so unique and different. I love witches, but don't read them often enough. This is incentive. These ladies sound like fun.
ReplyDelete......dhole
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, MSBjaneB and Donna. I appreciate the comments.
ReplyDeleteMSBjaneB - you're right, writing a certain character when you're in a specific mood is easy to do with these three. I'm glad you like my girls, and want to hear more about them.
Donna - I have a great love for witches, but this is the first time I've even written them. I'm glad you think they sound like fun.
Whew - you are a gluttton for punishment!:) It was interesting to read the three different character's answers though, good job!
ReplyDeleteYes, sometimes I can be a bit of a gluttton for punishment when it comes to writing! ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you found the three characters interesting, though. And thanks for stopping buy and leaving a comment. :)
