Happy Friday!

Happy Friday Everyone!

I hope you've all had a cracking week.

Things in my world have been good.

I reached the end of act one in my WiP new adult paranormal romance; just under 30k words. I'm at the point of the 'first disaster', where something unexpected happens to my main character, Roxie, and that propels her, the storyline, and her romantic relationship along a level.

Here's a small *unedited* excerpt of the action:

"Worst of all though was the look on Sol’s face. The news I'd received was bad enough but nothing  nothing compared to this. He was staring blankly ahead, his eyes that were usually so intense and expressive, empty and lifeless. His tanned skin had drained of all colour, and his lips had formed a tight, thin line. It broke my heart to see him like this."

Since getting to 30k, I've switched to editing act one, as I don't want to begin act two until I know the first 30k are as good as they can be. I've already given it one read through, simply checking for spellings and grammar. Now I'm going over in more detail, checking for other things like plot and character development. I've cut some chunks from the beginning of chapter one, and refined Roxie's voice a little too.  I'm pleased with how things are turning out so far.

Away from writing, I've also been working towards my goal of finding some industry work experience, culminating in interviewing with and then been offered a position with Curiosity Quills  as a Social Media Marketing Intern. I've also been invited to test for an editing and proofreading internship with them.  I've been watching CQs for a while now, and know a few of their writers. It seems like a really friendly place to work, and I cannot wait to get started on Monday. Just no whipping the newbie, okay? :P

I also contacted The Writers Bureau, who I started a correspondence writing course with in 2007 but had to stop due to personal circumstances, and was told as I paid for the course before 2009 I can resume my studies whenever I wish. I'm considering doing so, depending on how I can fit it around my schedule with everything else.

Next week should be interesting, as I try to juggle my new position, continue editing/ revising my WiP, and entertain my boys as they're on half-term holidays!

What has everyone been up to this week? Fill me in on your news.
What are your plans for next week? Doing anything exciting for the Bank Holiday/ Memorial day? Let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear all about it!

Whatever you're up to have fun, stay safe and I'll catch you all next week!

  1. Congratulations on the internship with Curiosity Quills! I know a lot of their authors as well and it seems like a really solid and friendly company.
I know they say to worry about spelling and grammar after the big edits are done, but I edit the same way you do. I can't even see the big things with those little errors glaring at me.

  3. Congrats on the position at CQ and I too hope they're kind to the new intern. *Winks* Poor Sol but congrats on reaching near the 30k mark in your WIP. And please do get back to your course when you can, you can learn so much from taking courses. Enjoy your weekend.

  7. Wow, Clare! Congrats on the new gig!!! I do love your idea for halting at 30k to edit before moving on. Think I'll have to borrow the idea for my next longer story. Have a great holiday. :)
